If you belong in the overlapping section of a Venn diagram representing those who love literature and those who love cats, the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum in Key West, Florida, is your personal slice of heaven. If you also happen to enjoy temperatures of 25 degrees Celcius in mid-February, that doesn’t hurt, either.
Recently, we were lucky enough to visit this historic landmark where Hemingway lived from approximately 1931 to 1939 with his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer and their two sons, as well as a number of six-toed, or polydactyl, cats. (If you have read Paula McLain’s novel The Paris Wife, based on Hemingway’s romance with his first wife, Hadley, you may still feel some lingering resentment towards Pauline, as we do.) Today, visitors to Key West can take guided tours of the house and garden, encountering artefacts from Hemingway’s life as well as more than 40 cats who now live on the grounds.
